Main research activities are carried out in the field of air quality. The focus during the last decade is on the development of measuring and sampling of aerosols in order to determine the chemical components in PM and associated source contributions. These AQ studies, and additional studies on climate change, are used to support the policy decision makers working at national, regional and local administrations.
The group has developed and participated in many national and international projects. More than one hundred papers have been published in the last decade, many of them in leading international peer–reviewed environmental journals. The group’s experience covers interpretation of time series, management and analysis of samples, and source apportionment studies in relation to health effects.
The international collaboration with well–recognized research groups is evidenced by the participation in international projects. Some examples are AirMonTech and JOAQUIN (in the field of air quality), and as coordinator of INGOS (climate research).

The research group Environmental Assessment of ECN possesses different instruments and facilities:
  • Instruments: high– and low–volume samplers for PM10, PM2.5 and PM1, optical particle counters, multi–angle absorption photometer (MAAP), aethalometers, condensation particle counters (CPC), scanning mobility particle sizers (SMPS),aerosol chemical speciation monitor (MARGA),QSL, Picarro analyser.
  • Laboratories/analysis techniques: Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP–AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS), electronmicroscopy, gravimetric analysis, particle–size distribution by laser method, organic carbon and elemental carbon by thermo–optical method.
