  • The main research activities carried out by the research team in atmospheric sciences during the last decade focus on the development of measuring and sampling of aerosols and the subsequent analysis of PM components in order to characterize the composition to quantify the major PM source contributions. These types of studies, and additionally studies on atmospheric dynamics, are used to support the interpretation of air masses and the emission sources affecting air quality. The team operates several ground based stations in urban (Barcelona), rural (Montseny) and remote (Montsec) areas.
  • The group has developed many national and international investigation projects and many agreements and contracts. More than one hundred and fifty papers have been published by the team on these atmospheric studies, many of them in leading international peer–reviewed environmental journals. As consequence of this research activity the group has received the Barton A. Thomas Memorial Award (University of Kentucky) and the Mario Molina Award from the IV Congreso Iberoameriocano de Química y Física Ambiental. Our group has directed or is currently directing about 20 PhD Theses in the last 17 years.
  • The group is one of the most active in the field of atmospheric particles in Spain. The research team provides technical and scientific advice to Spanish environmental authorities. Scientists of this team participate in the workgroup on particulate matter of the Clean Air For Europe (CAFE) program of the DG Environment for the evaluation of the EU air quality directives and in the particulate matter expert group from the Geneva Convention (UNECE).
  • The group developed an own scientific methodology which covers interpretation of time series, management and analysis of samples, and source apportionment studies. In the last years the group has trained technical and scientific personnel of at least eight universities and research institutes, who are currently applying the same methodology. Moreover, the adaptation of this methodology for identification of natural contributions in PM10 has been adopted by the DG Environment of EU.
  • The group also works on indoor air quality assessment, including workplace environments. The team has expertise in the assessment and testing of sensor devices for air quality monitoring and their comparison with conventional measurements.
  • The international collaboration with well–recognized research groups is evidenced by the participation in several international projects. As an example, we carried out studies in mega–cities such as México D.F. (Milagro campaign coordinated by Dr. Mario Molina) and in China (in collaboration with the China University of Geosciences and the City Council).
