  • In the frame of the project funded by Croatian Science Foundation "The Sulphur and Carbon Dynamics in the Sea– and Fresh–water Environment"(SPHERE)", Croatian RBI TD1105 group are studying sulphur (S) and carbon (C) dynamics between different environmental compartments (atmosphere, water, sediment, biota) of the sea– and fresh–water environment. Our main focus is on distribution between organic, inorganic, dissolved, colloidal and nanoparticulate fraction. Important part of the project is focused on characterization of aerosols by electrochemical and chromatographic methods. The main proposed research questions are: properties and deposition processes of atmospheric organic matter (OM) and S species in gas and particles of the atmosphere in the coastal Adriatic regions of Croatia (SPHERE "hotspots"); atmospheric OM distribution and removal in relation to rainwater OM and aerosol water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction; main compounds of atmosphere volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including DMS, organosulphates and oxygenated organic compounds; atmospheric aerosol deposition and inputs of trace micronutrients (Fe,Mn, nitrate) and anthropogenically related trace metals (Pb, Cd).
  • RBI group has very long tradition (more than 50 years) in using electrochemistry for studying different biogeochemical processes in water environment, especially those related with organic matter, sulfur species and trace metals cycling and their distribution between dissolved and colloidal phases.

  • RBI group is equipped with different valuable analytical and laboratory instrumentation needed in environmental studies of inorganic and organic constituents: flame atomic absorption spectrometer, cold–vapor atomic absorption spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma with mass spectrometry, gas chromatographs equipped with various detectors such as mass spectrometric, electron capture, thermoionic and flame ionization detectors, high performance liquid chromatographs equipped with spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric detectors
  • electrochemical equipment ( various types of potentiostat and galvanostats with different types of working electrode
  • more general equipment needed for sample storage, characterization and work–up is also available, including particle counter, total organic carbon (TOC) and POC analyzer, IATROSCAN MK–6 LIPID ANALYSER, cooled Supraspeed centrifuge (up to 100 000xg) by Sorvall, Avanti J–E High Performance Centrifuge by Beckman (up to 53 000xg), UV/VIS and fluorescence spectrophotometer, fixed wavelength microplate reader, deep–freezers at –80°C
  • RBI Marine station as annex RBI location at Šibenik, Adriatic coast, is place where extensive fundamental and applied research on estuary and marine coastal areas equatorial (Šibenik, Northern Adriatic, Split, Neretva and Dubrovnik areas) take place since 1980. In the marine station mainly electrochemical equipment and one cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometer, CV AAS for mercury determination exists. Marine station has at disposal 7 m long motor boat for field work.
